Proverbs 4:8 – Exalt Wisdom and Embrace Her

Proverbs 4:8

Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

The Blessing of Embracing Wisdom

Proverbs 4:8 continues the teaching about the great value of wisdom. After telling us that wisdom is the principal thing, Solomon now encourages us to exalt and embrace wisdom.

The verse begins, “Exalt her, and she shall promote thee.” To exalt means to lift up, honor, or give something an important place. This teaches us that godly wisdom should not be treated as something secondary in our lives. We should value it and allow it to influence our decisions.

Embrace Wisdom

The verse continues, “she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.”

The word “embrace” gives us a beautiful picture. It suggests holding something closely and valuing it deeply. Solomon is encouraging us not merely to learn wisdom but to make it part of our lives.

There is a difference between knowing wisdom and embracing it. We may know what is right but still choose another path. Embracing wisdom means allowing God's truth to shape our thoughts, attitudes, choices, and actions.

When wisdom becomes part of our character, others may see qualities such as honesty, humility, patience, self-control, and kindness in our lives. These qualities bring genuine honor because they reflect God's character.

Wisdom Leads to True Honor

The world often defines honor by wealth, popularity, position, or achievements. Proverbs presents a different perspective. True honor is connected with living wisely and righteously.

A person who chooses integrity over dishonesty, humility over pride, and obedience over compromise may not always receive immediate recognition. Yet God values a life that follows His wisdom.

The honor promised in this verse should therefore be understood in the context of a life shaped by godly wisdom. Wisdom brings dignity to our character and helps us become people others can trust.
