Make Wisdom Your Priority

Proverbs 4:7 gives us one of the most important instructions in the book of Proverbs: “Wisdom is the principal thing.” This means wisdom should have a place of great importance in our lives.

The world often encourages us to pursue education, wealth, success, recognition, and possessions. While these things may have value, Scripture reminds us that godly wisdom is far more important.

Therefore Get Wisdom

The verse continues with a direct instruction: “therefore get wisdom.”

With All Thy Getting Get Understanding

The verse concludes, “and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Understanding helps us apply wisdom correctly. We may know what the Bible says, but understanding helps us recognize how its principles should influence our daily lives.

For example, knowing that we should forgive is important. Understanding helps us recognize how to practice forgiveness when someone hurts us. Knowing that we should trust God is important. Understanding helps us continue trusting Him when circumstances are uncertain.

Knowledge tells us what we know; understanding helps us put that knowledge into practice.

Why Is Wisdom So Important?

Wisdom influences every area of our lives. It affects our relationships, decisions, words, priorities, and responses to difficulties.

A wise person learns from correction rather than rejecting it. A wise person thinks before speaking, considers consequences, seeks God's guidance, and remains humble.

Most importantly, true biblical wisdom begins with reverence for God. When we place Him at the center of our lives, we gain the right foundation for making wise choices.

Lessons from Proverbs 4:7

1. Make Wisdom a Priority

Do not allow temporary things to become more important than spiritual wisdom.

Read God's Word, pray for understanding, and listen to godly counsel.
