Proverbs 4:27 – Turn Not to the Right Hand or the Left

“Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.”

— Proverbs 4:27 (KJV)

Proverbs 4 has given us many important instructions about walking in wisdom. We have been encouraged to listen to God's Word, keep His instruction in our hearts, guard our hearts, watch our words, keep our eyes focused, and carefully consider the path of our feet.

The chapter now concludes with a direct instruction: stay on the right path and turn away from evil.

Life presents us with many choices and distractions. Some paths may appear attractive or easy, but not every direction is good for us. Proverbs 4:27 reminds us to remain focused on God's way and deliberately distance ourselves from evil.

“Turn Not to the Right Hand Nor to the Left”

This phrase gives us a picture of someone walking along a straight path.

The instruction is not to become distracted and turn aside. When we know the path God wants us to follow, we should remain faithful rather than allowing every temptation, influence, or opportunity to change our direction.

There may be times when others choose a different path. There may also be moments when the wrong path appears easier or more appealing.

But God's wisdom calls us to remain steady.

Faithfulness often means continuing in the right direction even when another way seems more convenient.

“Remove Thy Foot from Evil”

The final instruction is very practical:

“remove thy foot from evil.”

Notice that the verse does not tell us to stand near evil and see how close we can get. It tells us to remove our foot from it.

This teaches us the importance of actively turning away from sin.

When we recognize that something is leading us away from God, we should not deliberately remain close to it. Sometimes the wisest response is to create distance.

Avoiding temptation is not a sign of weakness. It is an expression of wisdom.

Staying on the Right Path

Proverbs 4:27 connects beautifully with verse 26:

“Ponder the path of thy feet.”

First, we are told to examine our path. Then we are told not to turn aside from it and to remove our foot from evil.

This gives us a simple pattern for Christian living:

Examine your path. Choose the right direction. Stay on it. Turn away from evil.

We cannot always control what happens around us, but we can prayerfully consider the choices we make and the direction in which we are walking.

Do Not Be Distracted by Other Paths

Comparison can sometimes cause us to lose our focus.

We may look at someone else's life and wonder whether their choices would make our lives easier. We may be tempted to follow popular trends simply because many people are doing the same thing.

But popularity does not determine what is right.

God's Word should be our guide. When Scripture shows us the right path, we should remain faithful to it even when the world around us chooses differently.

Lessons from Proverbs 4:27

1. Stay Focused on God's Path

Do not allow every distraction or influence to change the direction of your life. Keep your focus on God's truth.

2. Turn Away from Evil

When you recognize something as sinful or harmful, do not deliberately remain close to it. Take steps to move away.

3. Do Not Follow the Crowd

The fact that many people choose a particular path does not make it right. Let God's Word determine your direction.

4. Be Intentional About Your Choices

Walking wisely requires daily decisions. Choose carefully what you allow into your heart, mind, relationships, and habits.

5. Remain Faithful

There will be times when staying on the right path is difficult. Continue trusting God and remain faithful to His Word.

How Can We Apply This Verse?

We can apply Proverbs 4:27 by identifying the things that tend to pull us away from God and intentionally creating distance from them.

When we recognize temptation, we should not entertain it unnecessarily. We can change our environment, redirect our thoughts, seek God's help in prayer, and turn our attention toward what is good and right.

We should also regularly examine our direction. If we have begun drifting away from God's ways, we can turn back to Him.

God's grace gives us the opportunity to return to the right path.

A Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Help me to remain on the path You have set before me. Keep me from turning to the right or to the left when distractions and temptations come my way.

Give me wisdom to recognize evil and courage to turn away from it. Help me not to follow the crowd or be influenced by paths that lead me away from You.

Strengthen my heart to remain faithful to Your Word. Guide my steps each day and help me walk in righteousness, wisdom, and obedience.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Final Thoughts

Proverbs 4:27 gives us a clear conclusion to this chapter of wisdom: stay on the right path and remove yourself from evil.

We may encounter many different paths throughout life, but God's Word gives us the wisdom to recognize the way we should walk.

Let us keep our eyes focused, carefully consider our steps, and refuse to turn aside from God's truth. And whenever we encounter evil, may we have the wisdom and courage to turn away from it.

“Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.”
