Proverbs 4:17 – The Bread of Wickedness
“For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.”
— Proverbs 4:17 (KJV)
Proverbs 4:17 continues the description of those who walk in the way of evil. In the previous verse, we saw how deeply wickedness can influence a person's desires. This verse uses the familiar images of bread and wine to describe how wrongdoing can become deeply woven into a person's life.
The verse gives us a solemn warning about becoming comfortable with sin and reminds us to choose God's way instead.
“They Eat the Bread of Wickedness”
The verse says, “For they eat the bread of wickedness.”
Bread is something people need regularly for nourishment. By comparing wickedness to bread, this verse gives us a picture of people who have made evil a regular part of their lives.
What we repeatedly consume can shape us. This principle applies not only to physical food but also to what we allow into our hearts and minds.
When a person continually chooses sinful thoughts, attitudes, and actions, wrongdoing can become a habitual part of life.
As believers, we should instead desire the nourishment that comes from God's Word and truth.
“Drink the Wine of Violence”
The second part of the verse says, “and drink the wine of violence.”
Wine is associated with something that is consumed. Here, violence is portrayed as something that has become part of their regular way of living.
The verse describes a life in which harming others is no longer viewed as something shocking or unusual. It has become part of their behavior.
This is a warning about how repeated sin can affect the heart. When wrong is continually practiced, a person can become increasingly comfortable with it.
What We Allow Into Our Lives Matters
Proverbs 4:17 encourages us to examine what we are allowing to become a regular part of our lives.
Our habits influence our character. The things we repeatedly watch, hear, think about, and practice can shape our attitudes and choices.
Therefore, we need to be intentional about what we allow to influence us.
Instead of feeding our hearts with anger, hatred, bitterness, or sinful desires, we should fill our minds with God's truth and cultivate love, righteousness, mercy, and wisdom.
Choose What Nourishes Your Soul
The contrast between the bread of wickedness and the wisdom taught throughout Proverbs is important.
God calls us to choose what gives life rather than what produces destruction. His Word teaches us to love what is good, reject evil, and treat others with kindness and righteousness.
Every day, we make choices about what we will allow to shape our hearts. Let us choose influences that strengthen our relationship with God and help us grow in wisdom.
Lessons from Proverbs 4:17
1. Sin Can Become a Habit
When wrong choices are repeatedly made, they can become deeply rooted habits. We should be careful not to become comfortable with sin.
2. What We Consume Influences Us
The things we repeatedly allow into our minds and hearts can influence our thoughts, attitudes, and behavior.
3. Violence and Wickedness Are Destructive
God's Word does not encourage us to respond to others with violence or hatred. We are called to pursue righteousness, peace, and love.
4. Choose Godly Influences
We should intentionally surround ourselves with God's Word and influences that encourage wise and righteous living.

Final Thoughts
Proverbs 4:17 gives us a powerful picture of how deeply wickedness can become part of a person's life. The imagery of eating the bread of wickedness and drinking the wine of violence reminds us that repeated choices can become established habits.
We should therefore guard our hearts carefully. Let us reject influences that draw us toward evil and instead fill our lives with God's Word, wisdom, love, and righteousness.
May we always choose what nourishes our souls and leads us closer to God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for warning me through Your Word about the dangers of becoming comfortable with wickedness. Help me examine my heart and recognize anything that is drawing me away from You.
Keep me from sinful habits and harmful influences. Help me to fill my heart and mind with Your Word, truth, love, peace, and righteousness.
Teach me to treat others with kindness and to reject anger, hatred, and violence. May the things I allow into my life bring me closer to You and help me grow in wisdom.
Guide my thoughts, words, and actions so that my life may honor You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
