Proverbs 4:15 – Avoid the Path of Evil
“Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.”
Proverbs 4:15 continues the warning given in the previous verse. We are told not only to avoid the path of the wicked but to take deliberate action when we encounter the way of evil. The message is simple and powerful: do not approach sin—avoid it, turn away from it, and move on.
“Avoid It”
The verse begins with the command, “Avoid it.”
When we know that something is wrong, wisdom tells us not to become involved with it. Sometimes we may think we can get close to temptation without being affected by it. But Scripture teaches us to be cautious.
Avoiding temptation is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of wisdom. We do not have to prove our strength by placing ourselves in situations that can lead us into sin.
“Pass Not By It”
The next instruction is, “pass not by it.”
This means we should not deliberately go near the path of evil. If we know that a particular situation, influence, or activity can lead us away from God, it is wise to stay away.
There are times when the best response to temptation is not to negotiate with it but simply to walk in another direction.
“Turn From It”
The verse then says, “turn from it.”
Turning requires a decision. We may recognize that we are heading in the wrong direction, but we must choose to change course.
Perhaps we have already taken a few wrong steps. Proverbs reminds us that we can still turn away. We should not continue down a wrong path simply because we have already started walking on it.
God calls us to repentance—to turn away from what is wrong and return to His ways.
“And Pass Away”
Finally, we are told to “pass away.”
The instruction is repeated with urgency. Do not remain near the path of evil. Move away from it.
This is an important principle for Christian living. When temptation appears, we should not give it unnecessary attention. We should turn our hearts and minds toward God and continue on the right path.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for warning me about the dangers of the wrong path. Give me wisdom to recognize temptation and strength to avoid it.
Help me not to go near things that can lead me away from You. When I find myself moving in the wrong direction, give me the courage to turn around and return to Your ways.
Guard my heart and mind from evil influences. Help me to walk faithfully in Your truth and make choices that honor You.
Guide my steps each day and keep me on the path of wisdom and righteousness.
