Proverbs 4:13 – Hold Fast to Instruction and Do Not Let It Go

 “Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.” — Proverbs 4:13 (KJV)


Proverbs 4:13 gives us a powerful command: hold firmly to instruction and do not let it go. In the previous verses, we learned that wisdom leads us in right paths and helps us avoid stumbling. Now, we are told to value godly instruction so highly that we must hold on to it as something essential to life.

Hold Fast to Instruction

The verse begins with, “Take fast hold of instruction.”

Instruction teaches us what is right and helps us understand how we should live. God's Word provides correction, direction, and wisdom for our daily lives.

Holding fast means taking instruction seriously and refusing to abandon it when life becomes difficult. It is easy to follow God's ways when everything is going well, but true faithfulness is demonstrated when we continue to obey even during trials and temptations.

“Let Her Not Go”

The next words are, “let her not go.”

This is a call to perseverance. We should not allow pressure, temptation, worldly opinions, or difficult circumstances to cause us to abandon the wisdom we have received.

There may be times when following God's instruction seems difficult. Yet God's truth does not change simply because our circumstances change.

We must keep His Word close to our hearts and continue to follow it.

Keep Wisdom Close

The verse continues, “keep her.”

What we value, we protect. If we understand the importance of God's wisdom, we will make an effort to preserve it in our hearts.

We can keep God's instruction by reading His Word, remembering what we have learned, meditating upon Scripture, and putting it into practice.

Wisdom becomes more meaningful when it moves beyond our minds and becomes part of our daily lives.

“For She Is Thy Life”

The final phrase is especially powerful: “for she is thy life.”

Godly wisdom is not merely useful advice. It affects the direction, character, and quality of our lives.

Following God's instruction helps us avoid destructive paths and teaches us to live according to His purposes. His truth gives us a firm foundation when everything around us is changing.

Therefore, we should never treat God's instruction as something unimportant. It is precious and life-giving.
