Psalm 5:1

"Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation."

David begins by asking God to listen—not only to his spoken words but also to the silent thoughts and burdens of his heart ("meditation" or "groaning"). This reminds us that God understands both our prayers and our unspoken struggles.

Application: God hears both what you say and what you cannot put into words.

Psalm 5:2

"Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray."

David acknowledges God's authority by calling Him "my King" and expresses a personal relationship by saying "my God." He commits himself to bringing his needs to God alone.

Application: Prayer is an act of trust in God's rule and care.

Psalm 5:3

"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord..."

David makes morning prayer a priority. He expects God to hear him and waits expectantly for God's answer.

Psalm 5:4

"For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness..."

God's holiness means He does not delight in evil or tolerate sin.

"The foolish shall not stand in thy sight..."

The "foolish" refers to arrogant people who reject God. They cannot stand justified before Him because He opposes evil.

"Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing..."

"Leasing" means lies. David says God judges those who deceive and commit violence.

"But as for me, I will come into thy house..."

"Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness..."

Psalm 5:9

"For there is no faithfulness in their mouth..."

David describes the wicked as deceitful. Their words are destructive, like an open grave, and they flatter to manipulate others.

Psalm 5:10

"Destroy thou them, O God..."

This is an imprecatory prayer—a prayer asking God to judge persistent evildoers. David leaves vengeance in God's hands rather than taking revenge himself.

Psalm 5:11

"But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice..."

"For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous..."

Heavenly Father,

When I face opposition, remind me that You are my Defender. Help me not to seek revenge but to leave every situation in Your hands, trusting that You are the righteous Judge who always does what is right.

Thank You for Your unfailing love and abundant mercy that allow me to come boldly into Your presence. Surround me with Your favor as with a shield. Protect me from danger, strengthen me in times of weakness, and fill my heart with Your peace and joy.
