Proverbs 3:34 – God Gives Grace to the Humble

Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

The Blessing of Humility

Proverbs 3:34 teaches us an important lesson about pride and humility. God does not look at people according to worldly status, wealth, or achievements. He looks at the heart.

The verse begins, "Surely he scorneth the scorners." A scorner is someone who treats others or God's wisdom with contempt, arrogance, or disrespect. A proud heart refuses correction and believes it does not need guidance. Scripture repeatedly warns us about the dangers of such an attitude.

Pride can prevent us from recognizing our mistakes. It can make us unwilling to listen, apologize, learn, or accept correction. When pride controls our hearts, we can easily drift away from God's wisdom.

But the second part of the verse gives us wonderful encouragement: "But he giveth grace unto the lowly." The lowly are those who are humble before God. They recognize their dependence on Him and are willing to listen to His Word.

God gives grace to the humble because humility opens our hearts to His guidance. When we admit that we do not have all the answers, we make room for God's wisdom to work in our lives.

Humility does not mean thinking that we have no value. Instead, it means recognizing that everything we have ultimately comes from God and that we need His wisdom, strength, and grace every day.

What Can We Learn from Proverbs 3:34?

1. Pride Can Keep Us from God's Wisdom

A proud heart resists correction and refuses to acknowledge its need for God. We must guard ourselves against spiritual pride.

2. God Delights in Humility

Humility makes us teachable. When we willingly listen to God's Word, He can shape our character and guide our decisions.

3. Grace Is a Gift from God

We cannot earn God's grace through our achievements. He graciously gives it to those who come before Him with humble hearts.

4. Be Willing to Learn

A humble person is willing to receive correction, learn from others, admit mistakes, and grow spiritually.

How Can We Practice Humility?

  • Pray and acknowledge your dependence on God.
  • Be willing to accept correction.
  • Listen carefully before responding.
  • Admit your mistakes and ask for forgiveness.
  • Avoid looking down on others.
  • Give God the credit for your blessings and achievements.
  • Choose service over self-promotion.

Final Thoughts

Proverbs 3:34 reminds us that God resists pride but gives grace to the humble. The world may encourage us to promote ourselves, but God's Word calls us to walk humbly with Him.

When we humble ourselves before God, we become more willing to receive His wisdom, correction, and grace. Let us choose humility over pride and allow God to shape our hearts according to His will.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your abundant grace and mercy. Keep my heart from pride and arrogance. Help me to remain humble, teachable, and willing to receive Your correction. Teach me to depend on You rather than trusting in my own strength and understanding. Fill me with Your grace and help me reflect the humility and love of Christ in everything I do.
