True Wisdom Begins with Humility

Proverbs 3:7

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

In today's world, people are encouraged to trust their own knowledge, opinions, and abilities. While wisdom and learning are valuable, the Bible reminds us that true wisdom begins with humility before God.

Proverbs 3:7 warns us against being "wise in our own eyes." Pride can make us believe that we have all the answers and no longer need God's guidance. When we depend solely on our own understanding, we are more likely to make decisions that lead us away from God's perfect will.

Instead, God calls us to fear the Lord. Biblical fear is not about being terrified of God but about having deep reverence, respect, and awe for Him. It means recognizing His authority, trusting His wisdom, and choosing to obey His commands.

The second part of the verse says to "depart from evil." Those who truly honor God will strive to turn away from sin and pursue righteousness. This requires daily surrender, repentance, and a willingness to let God transform our hearts.

What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?

Fearing the Lord includes:

  • Respecting God's authority above our own opinions.
  • Seeking His wisdom through prayer and His Word.
  • Obeying His commandments with a willing heart.
  • Turning away from sinful habits and temptations.
  • Living a life that honors Christ in both words and actions.

Final Thoughts

God's wisdom is far greater than human understanding. As we humble ourselves before Him, honor Him with reverence, and turn away from evil, we experience the peace and direction that only He can give. Let us seek His wisdom daily and live lives that bring glory to His name.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me that true wisdom comes from You alone. Guard me from pride and from trusting only in my own understanding. Fill my heart with reverence for You and help me to walk in obedience every day. Give me the strength to turn away from evil and to choose what is pleasing in Your sight. Shape my life to reflect Your holiness and love.
