Proverbs 3:11

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:


Do Not Despise the Lord's Chastening

No one enjoys correction. Whether it comes through difficult circumstances, conviction of sin, or loving instruction, discipline can be uncomfortable. Yet Proverbs 3:11 reminds us that God's correction is never meant to harm us—it is meant to shape us into the people He created us to be.

The verse begins with a loving appeal: "My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD." To despise God's discipline is to reject or ignore His loving guidance. Instead of resisting His correction, we are called to receive it with humility and a teachable heart.

The second part of the verse says, "Neither be weary of his correction." Sometimes we become discouraged when God allows trials or exposes areas of our lives that need to change. We may wonder why we are facing difficulties. However, God uses these moments to strengthen our faith, refine our character, and draw us closer to Him.

God's discipline is not punishment for those who belong to Him—it is loving instruction from a caring Father. Just as a parent corrects a child out of love, our Heavenly Father disciplines His children so they may grow in wisdom, holiness, and obedience.

When we accept God's correction, we learn valuable lessons that produce spiritual maturity, deeper faith, and greater dependence on Him.

How Should We Respond to God's Discipline?

  • Receive correction with humility instead of pride.
  • Trust that God is working for your good.
  • Ask Him to reveal what He wants to teach you.
  • Remain faithful during seasons of testing.
  • Grow in obedience through His loving guidance.

Final Thoughts

God's discipline is one of the greatest expressions of His love. He corrects us because He desires our spiritual growth and eternal good. Rather than becoming discouraged, let us welcome His loving guidance with faith and gratitude.

When God corrects us, He is preparing us for greater maturity, stronger faith, and a closer relationship with Him.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me enough to correct and guide me. Help me not to resist Your discipline or become discouraged when You shape my life. Give me a humble heart that welcomes Your correction and a willing spirit that obeys Your Word. Teach me through every trial and help me grow in faith, wisdom, and Christlike character.
