A New Mind and a New Self

Ephesians 4:22–24

You Were Taught, With Regard To Your Former Way Of Life, To Put Off Your Old Self, Which Is Being Corrupted By Its Deceitful Desires;

 To Be Made New In The Attitude Of Your Minds;

And To Put On The New Self, Created To Be Like God In True Righteousness And Holiness.

Ephesians 4:22–24 is a beautiful reminder that spiritual transformation is not just a change in behavior—it is a renewal of the mind and heart. Paul teaches that following Christ involves a complete shift from the old life to the new one. This is not something we do once, but something we choose daily.

“Put off your old self.”
The old self represents habits, thoughts, attitudes, and desires that pull us away from God. It includes anger, pride, bitterness, lies, and selfishness. These things slowly corrupt the heart and distract us from God’s purpose. But through Christ, we have the power to lay them aside.

“Be made new in the attitude of your minds.”
True change begins internally. When our mind is renewed by God’s Word, our choices, emotions, and actions begin to reflect His truth. Renewal is a process—gentle, steady, and guided by the Holy Spirit.

“Put on the new self.”
God invites us to step into a new identity—one shaped by His righteousness and holiness. This new self shows kindness, forgiveness, humility, and love. It mirrors Christ’s character and reveals God’s work in us.

Every day, we get to choose which “self” we will wear. When we turn away from old patterns and seek God’s renewing power, He shapes us into who He created us to be.

Today, let this verse encourage you to let go of what holds you back and embrace the new life God is forming within you.

Prayer

Lord, help me lay aside my old ways and allow Your Spirit to renew my mind. Teach me to walk in the new self You created—filled with righteousness, holiness, and Your love. Amen.
