Proverbs 1:28 - The Cry That Comes Too Late

The Cry That Comes Too Late

Proverbs 1:28 (KJV) Says:

"Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me."

This verse is part of Proverbs 1, where Wisdom is personified and calls out to people, urging them to follow God's ways. However, those who reject wisdom and choose their own sinful paths will eventually face consequences. When trouble comes, they will desperately seek God, but it will be too late—He will not respond because they ignored Him when they had the chance.

They are four Meditation Points:

The Importance of Seeking God Early

  • This verse warns against delaying our relationship with God. If we wait until disaster strikes to call on Him, we may find that the opportunity for repentance has passed.
  • Just as we should prepare for storms before they come, we must seek God consistently rather than only in times of need.
  • A great biblical example of seeking God early is King Solomon.

In 1 Kings 3:5-14, when Solomon became king, he sought God early in his reign. Instead of asking for wealth or power, he asked for wisdom to govern God’s people. Because he prioritized God first, he was blessed with wisdom, riches, and honor beyond any other king.

This shows that when we seek God early—whether in life, in decisions, or in challenges—He responds with guidance and blessings.

God’s Justice and Patience

  • God is loving and merciful, but He also gives people free will. When we repeatedly reject His guidance, we may face the consequences of our choices.
  • While He is always ready to forgive a repentant heart, ignoring Him until the last moment can lead to missed opportunities for His blessings and protection.
  • A powerful example of God's justice and patience is Noah’s Generation (Genesis 6-7).
    • God saw that the earth was filled with wickedness, but He was patient and gave people time to repent while Noah built the ark. For 120 years, Noah preached righteousness (2 Peter 2:5), but the people ignored God’s warning. Finally, God's justice was seen when the flood came, saving only Noah and his family.
    • This shows that while God is patient, giving people time to repent, His justice will surely come upon those who continue in sin.

The Danger of Ignoring Wisdom

  • Proverbs 1 highlights how people refuse to listen to wisdom and mock God's truth. But when calamity comes, their regrets will not change their past choices.
  • True wisdom means learning from God's Word before difficulties arise, rather than waiting for hardships to force us to turn to Him.
  • A strong example is King Rehoboam (1 Kings 12:1-19).
    • When Rehoboam became king after Solomon, the people asked him to lighten the heavy taxes. Instead of following the wise advice of the elders, he ignored wisdom and listened to his young friends, increasing the burden on the people. As a result, the kingdom split—Israel was divided into two nations (Israel and Judah).
    • This shows that rejecting wisdom leads to disaster, loss, and regret.

A Call to Wholehearted Devotion

  • This verse challenges us to seek God with sincerity, not just when we need something.
  • Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
  • God desires a real relationship, not occasional cries for help.
  • A great example is Daniel (Daniel 6:10-23).
    • Even when a law was passed forbidding prayer to anyone except the king, Daniel remained devoted to God. He continued praying three times a day, just as he always had. Because of his unwavering faith, he was thrown into the lion’s den, but God miraculously saved him.
    • This shows that wholehearted devotion to God brings divine protection, favor, and victory.

What should we do?

  • Prioritize Time with God – Read His Word daily, pray, and meditate on His wisdom instead of waiting for trouble to strike.
  • Listen to His Warnings – When God convicts us about something, respond immediately instead of ignoring Him.
  • Live in Obedience – Make choices based on God’s wisdom rather than relying on human understanding.
  • Repent Sincerely – If we have strayed, return to God now instead of waiting until difficulties come.

The key lesson is to fear the Lord, seek His wisdom daily, and obey His voice before it’s too late.
